Elon Musk's xAI to Open Source Grok Chatbot 'This Week'

Elon Musk is saying that xAI's Grok chatbot will soon be open-sourced to the public within "this week."

Open sourcing the chatbot means anyone will soon be able to inspect, modify, and change the source code of the AI according to their preferences.

Musk did not specify how the open sourcing will roll out, whether it will only be available to X (formerly Twitter) premium subscribers like the Grok chatbot did.

The Wall Street Journal noted that the decision will benefit the chatbot in growing a bigger userbase through third-party developers and researchers.

Elon Musk Swipes at OpenAI Amid Legal Dispute

Of course, Musk did not let the chance pass by without throwing some shade at OpenAI, which despite its name is not open-sourced.

In a reply to a comment telling his competitor to do the same, the billionaire said, "OpenAI is a lie."

Musk and the ChatGPT creator are currently embroiled in a legal battle over OpenAI's supposed agreement violations when the billionaire helped the company start in 2015.

OpenAI dismissed Musk's allegations as "convoluted" and "frivolous" in an attempt to take over the AI firm to help his struggling business with Tesla.

X Still Struggling in Revenues

It is worth noting that many of the features Musk has recently rolled out on X are locked behind paywalls as the platforms continue to struggle to gain profit.

Unlike other chatbots launched by its competitor, even Meta, Grok is only available to a small number of premium subscribers on the app.

Late last year, major brands did an ad exodus on the platform after reports of Antisemitic and pro-Nazi posts appearing next to sponsored ads.

Financial reports from the company indicated a large ad revenue drop throughout 2023 due to the incident.

Many of the advertisers have yet to return to X after Musk swore them off.
