AI Video Generators: Will They be Harmful or Helpful?

We are at an age where artificial intelligence is creeping into every industry, and while it can be seen as a way to streamline operations or lessen the workload, some are concerned about the ethical aspects of the technology. There are now AI tools that can create realistic videos, so what does that exactly mean?

Ways It Can Be Helpful

You probably know by now that generative AI tools like chatbots can be beneficial in certain scenarios. You can ask it to do so many things such as planning a vacation, writing a short story, or even summarizing long and complex topics.

The same can be done with AI video generators. Through text prompts, you can tell the AI model what you want to see in the generated content. With the right details, you can get exactly what you want and more, all without having to do the grueling work that comes with the territory.

With an AI tool, creators will be able to create content in a fraction of the time it would take to shoot or animate videos. This kind of efficiency and speed can be used by businesses and organizations, especially since this method will also be the cheaper option.

In addition to that, it's the more accessible option. Other than the cost or subscription price of preferable editing tools and cameras, there are AI video generators that have free versions, and do a good enough job to create what an artist may have envisioned.

Even if one does manage to purchase or pay for good editing software, it can take months just to learn the basics, let alone reach the professional level of the craft. The same goes for shooting videos. With AI tools, learning the right prompts would be enough to create something that's just as good.

Ways It Can Be Harmful

There's a reason why regulators are keeping a close eye on the advancement of AI, and that's because it has a huge potential for misuse. Bad actors can easily exploit the tools and services to add credibility to malicious or fraudulent activities.

With access to clips of one's voice and images, anyone can easily create a video of an individual saying things they never would, which would damage their reputation. This is an especially concerning issue given that elections are right around the corner.

There's also the topic of job displacement. With the tools being so efficient and easy to use, basically, anyone can do it, which means that companies or businesses will no longer have the need to hire professionals in the field.

This can make a huge impact on the video editing, production, and content creation industry. There's a likely chance that businesses will prefer the easy and cheaper option over hiring human workers, especially since there will be the factor of human error and the fact that they need to get paid.

Ethical reasons have also been raised, even with the standard AI tools like chatbots. Some claim that AI companies have used their work to train AI models without their consent. With image generators deriving generated content from protected works, it's not a leap for video generators to do the same.
