Atari to Launch Cult-Classic Yars Rising

Originally known as the Yars' Revenge, the franchise was introduced in 1982 for Atari 2600. In the game, players must control the insect-like creature, Yar, and try to destroy the evil Qotile.

As for Yars Rising, gamers must take control of the hacker Emi Kimura who was hired to infiltrate the QoTech corporation. Players can run, jump, sneak, and hack their way through challenges to solve the game.

Atari also promised that as the character's adventure progresses, the more expansive the sci-fi mystery becomes. "Yars Rising celebrates the Yars franchise in WayForward's distinct style of anime art, humor, retro game mechanics, and storytelling virtuosity," the game's premise read.

Atari Promises Strong Comeback for Retro Games

Atari was extremely popular during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The company made its breakthrough when it introduced the Atari 2600 gaming console.

The Yars franchise officially made a modern comeback last 2022 with the debut of Yars: Recharged. The game was met with mainly positive reviews on Steam and is still available for $9.99.

Meanwhile, Yars Rising is developed in collaboration with WayForward. The game is slated to be released in late 2024 for PC and across consoles. WayForward has a known reputation for bringing justice in modernizing older franchises.

The companies also promised that the upcoming game will be filled with a series of hacking minigames that pay homage to the original Yars' Revenge. Fans of the original game will also have the chance to play it from the main menu.
