YouTube Enables New Skipping Feature on Premium

The "Jump Ahead" feature was first rolled out to a small set of users in March. The experiment allowed users to skip ahead on the best parts of a YouTube video.

YouTube's double-tapping motion is known for moving its audience ahead by 10 seconds on the video. Every additional tap will result in a succeeding fast-forward motion until the user finds the best timestamp.

The new feature is similar as it still skips on the video. However, "Jump Ahead" relies on machine learning that logs the commonly watched portion of the video. The system will detect the portion for the users and will allow them to skip ahead on it by double tapping.

YouTube Improves Viewing Experience for Premium Subscribers

The "Jump Ahead" feature will appear to Premium users after double-tapping once. A pill-shaped button will be visible on the right side of the video for 10 seconds, prompting users to try it.

Once the 10 seconds expires, YouTube will proceed on fast-forwarding the video by 10 seconds, like the usual feature. The new AI-powered feature joins the "Ask" question tool that was released last November.

"Jump Ahead" is now available on YouTube's experiments page. However, the feature is only applicable to the mobile app.

Some Premium users also noted that the feature does not apply to every video. Most of the eligible videos have a lot of views and are in English.

YouTube Premium members can enable the feature and join the experiment until June 1.
