Purported HTC Nexus 9 leaks in new image, drops by FCC

The Google Nexus 9 from HTC is expected to make its debut next week and more pieces of the puzzle are surfacing in the meantime.

Google has made no official announcement so far, but the company is expected to take the wraps off at least one new Nexus device next week, on Oct. 16. With just a few days to go until then, the rumor mill is going into overdrive trying to anticipate what the 2014 Nexus lineup will bring to the table.

Amid a slew of rumors regarding the purported Motorola "Shamu" Nexus 6/X smartphone, the HTC Nexus 9 tablet is a very hot topic of interest as well. What is believed to be the HTC Nexus 9 was recently spotted at the FCC, which revealed a diagram of the tablet with an interesting aspect ratio.

A new tweet from tipster @upleaks (via Engadget) now reveals the alleged design of the upcoming HTC Nexus 9. As you can see in the image above, this alleged design seems to fall in line with the diagram found in the FCC listing, again hinting at an intriguing aspect ratio. The tablet's design appears to have a more square-ish form factor as opposed to the typical rectangular design of most tablets. In fact, this purported design seems reminiscent of the recently-launched BlackBerry Passport.

While this leak reveals the potential design and the FCC listing reveals the tablet's certifications for radios and Wi-Fi connectivity, we still don't have much to go on when it comes to specifications.

Various rumors have tried to paint a picture of what to expect from the HTC Nexus 9 in terms of specs, but nothing is confirmed at this point. Based on leaks so far, the Nexus 9 should come with an 8.9-inch QHD display (2560 x 1440), an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor, 4GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel rear camera. The slate will also reportedly come with a keyboard accessory that would also serve as a smart cover. On the software side, the HTC Nexus 9 is expected to come as the launch vehicle for Google's latest Android L.

With nothing officially confirmed, however, make sure to take everything with a grain of salt until Google makes a formal announcement.
