Verizon Droid Turbo powerhouse breaks cover, promises 48-hour battery life: All you need to know

The Verizon-bound Motorola Droid Turbo powerhouse is now official, set to hit retail on Oct. 30 with a $199.99 price tag.

The Motorola Droid Turbo starred in numerous leaks in recent times, and various reports hinted at great things to come. The smartphone is now finally official, and it is at least as impressive as we expected it to be.

"It's hard to believe that it's been five years since we launched the original DROID. Since then, DROID smartphones have come to be known for speed, power and endurance, built to outperform your expectations and push the limits of what smartphones can do. And today, we're excited to announce the latest in this lineup of premium smartphones: DROID Turbo," Motorola touted in a blog post on Tuesday, Oct. 28.

"From the beginning, DROID smartphones have come with leading-edge technology, including Verizon's blazingly fast network speeds, exceptional battery life and the latest in innovative material design. And DROID Turbo is no exception. Designed to keep pace with you, DROID Turbo gives you ultimate power and performance without compromise featuring amazing specs wrapped into a package of cutting-edge materials."

Design

The new Verizon Droid Turbo boasts a Kevlar-reinforced rear panel, in either Metallic Glass Fiber or Ballistic Nylon, and sports Gorilla Glass 3 protection on the front panel to make the display more durable. Water-repellent nanocoating, meanwhile, will allow the handset to easily handle the occasional splash without any issue.

Specs

While many expect a rugged smartphone to compromise some specifications in favor of sturdiness, the Droid Turbo does no such thing. The smartphone rocks a 5.2-inch AMOLED display with a QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor under the hood, clocked at 2.7GHz and backed up by 3GB of RAM.

Other specs of the Motorola Droid Turbo powerhouse include a 21-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash, a 2-megapixel front shooter, and a massive 3,900 mAh battery that will last for roughly 48 hours on a single charge. Moreover, the battery also supports Turbo Charging, allowing the smartphone to get up to eight hours of juice out of a 15-minute rapid charge.

In terms of software, the Droid Turbo runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box, complete with Motorola's neat software features such as Moto Assist, Display, Voice, and Actions, which proved so popular on the Moto X. The handset will also receive an update to the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop in the future.

Pricing and availability

When it comes to pricing and availability, the Verizon Droid Turbo will hit retail on Thursday, Oct. 30, with a $199.99 starting price. More specifically, the 32GB Droid Turbo will cost $199.99 with a two-year contract or $25 per month with Verizon Edge. This model will be available in Metallic Black, Metallic Red, and Black Ballistic Nylon. The 64GB variant of the handset will cost $249.99 with a two-year contract or $27 per month with Verizon Edge, but will be available only in Black Ballistic Nylon.

It's worth pointing out that interested customers who get the smartphone on a two-year contract will also benefit from one free screen replacement for their Droid Ultra, just in case the display gets damaged while it's still on contract.
