New Xiaomi smartphone drops by TENAA, looks like Redmi 1S successor

A yet-to-be-announced Xiaomi handset seems to be on its way, as it has just dropped by TENAA, China's equivalent of the FCC.

Xiaomi has been making lots of waves recently and it keeps growing, breaking record after record. Dubbed the "Apple of China," Xiaomi saw record sales of its devices and each new handset seems to enjoy tremendous success.

In the first half of this year, Xiaomi released its new Redmi 1S smartphone, which came as a semi-global version of the company's Hongmi smartphone that's exclusive to China. Both handsets rapidly turned into hot sellers, and it now looks like the company has a successor in the works.

An unnamed and unannounced Xiaomi device has just dropped by China's TENAA and it looks very similar to the Redmi 1S, albeit with a few differences. The new model sports redesigned capacitive keys and has the speaker grill and the LED flash in a different position on its back. Nevertheless, the resemblance is uncanny and suggests that this handset will arrive as a successor to the Redmi 1S.

According to the TENAA listing (translated), the new smartphone measures 134 x 67.21 x 9.2 mm and weighs in at 132 grams, which means that it's lighter and slightly smaller than the Redmi 1S, which measures 137 x 69 x 9.9 mm and weighs in at 158 grams.

In terms of specifications, this upcoming Xiaomi smartphone will apparently sport a 4.7-inch HD display with a resolution of 120 x 720 pixels and pack a 1.2GHz quad-core processor under the hood, but the CPU model remains unspecified for now. Other specs include 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage capacity, microSD card support for additional memory, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front shooter. The handset will support 4G LTE and run Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box.

In other words, the addition of 4G LTE connectivity and the newer Android 4.4.4 KitKat seem to be the most notable upgrades over the Redmi 1S. Lastly, this new Xiaomi device will apparently come in a colorful range of options, including black, white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.

No other information is available at this point, but TENAA certification suggests that this smartphone should make its official debut soon enough. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more, so stay tuned.
