PROJECT JACQUARD: Google and Levi’s to Weave Innovation in Fabrics

Google in partnership with Levi's is up into Project Jacquard, an endeavor to combine metallic alloys with either natural or synthetic yarns. Project Jacquard is named Joseph Marie Jacquard, an innovator of the first loom to weave patterns and designs into fabrics.

At its annual I/O developer conference, Google revealed futurism in the textile industry, which made the participants, bloggers, and business enthusiasts more excited. This latest trend, 'computerized fabrics' is all about bringing conductive threads to cloths and garments as touch sensors and other digital functions are integrated in your jeans, hoodies, tops, car seats, and even curtains.

Motion sensors and innovative chips that are incorporated in the said special fabrics can translate hand movements to digital commands and activate certain functionality. The wearer of the 'computerized fabrics' can make and answer a phone call, send messages, put the mobile on silent mode, and also monitor body temperature and heart rate.

Innovation never stops

These interactive textiles can control things like the user's mobile devices and other gadgets, having enhanced functions and operations on their own. Google's Advanced Technologies and Projects (ATAP) group and its industrial partners have also been developing these innovations to miniaturize certain components for unnoticeable placement.

Project Jacquard's primary targets are to resolve conventional limitations of wearable innovations and to modify regular yarns, making the threads sturdier and more enduring. The fabrics must be resilient enough and aesthetically designed for industrial weaving, mass-market, and production.

Head of Global Product Innovation and Premium Collection Design for Levi Strauss & Co., Paul Dillinger said, "In our hyper-digital world, people constantly struggle to be physically present in their environment while maintaining a digital connection."

The partnership and efforts that Google and Levi's have in their initiatives to provide worldwide consumers with interactive and multi-functional apparel are believed to be commendable and inspirational.
