Bluetooth 5 To Deliver Double Speed Increase For IoT

A new, more powerful version of Bluetooth is being currently developed and it will bring a range of enhancements for mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

According to Engadget, Bluetooth is still an evolving technology. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) is the organization that defines the Bluetooth standard.

Late last year, the SIG has announced the next major Bluetooth version change since 2009. Now, the organization shared more details about the release of Bluetooth 5.

The new Bluetooth standard is expected to come on the market in late 2016 or early 2017. The next version will double the speed of connections and quadruple their range with no increase in power consumption.

These particular improvements will provide immediate benefits. For instance, thanks to more bandwidth for data transfer, your next smartwatch should receive the push notifications much quicker. More bandwidth also becomes a lot more important when Bluetooth beacons and Internet of Things devices enter the conversation.

Bluetooth devices that broadcast information are becoming much more common. This kind of Bluetooth devices are independent and easier to communicate with. Bluetooth 5 will increase their broadcasting capacity, allowing much more data to be sent and received) in a single interaction.

According to IT Pro, these improvements will change the way Bluetooth devices transmit information, moving to a connectionless IoT model where there is less need to connect an app to a device. Mark Powell, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG, said that Bluetooth 5 will make IoT work seamlessly and simply around its users, transforming the way people experience the new technology.

The connections to IoT devices will extend far beyond the walls of a typical home, thanks to the increasing operation range. Bluetooth 5 will have the ability to broadcast a much richer set of information, making location awareness, beacons, and other connectionless services a relevant part of the IoT experience.
