Apple Patent: MacBook Air Gets Exclusive Rights Of Wedge Design

Apple has won a patent for the wedge or 'teardrop' design for the MacBook Air. The US patent D661,296 was awarded to the Cupertino tech giant by The US Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday. The new patent can cause complications for the makers of Ultrabooks that come with similar design.

With the new approved Apple Design Patent, the company gains exclusive rights to design the 'teardrop' form introduced in the MacBook Air range.

While the dashed lines are not going to be part of Apple's design, the solid lines will be. The patent document has mentioned that there are also some attributes in the drawing which displays what the device looks like specifically:

"The gray shading on the electronic device represents a metallic-looking surface. The relatively light gray shade lines on the surface portions indicate contour and not surface decoration. The Broken lines are for the purpose of illustrating portions of the electronic device and form no part of the claimed design."

According to the MacWorld Australia and The Verge, since the design patent document only features the illustration of the body of the MacBook Air and give no details or design specifics or what exactly has been patented, the Cupertino-based company can block any company by issuing infringement complaint against devices with minor or ordinary similarities.

"This gives the patent more scope, due to lack of definition of what Apple is claiming as their own and what they want to block other companies from replicating," says MacWorld Australia.

And, seeing Apple's aggressiveness in protecting its patents from being used by the competitors, tough time is coming for the other tablet makers, believe experts.
