Nokia 808 PureView U.S. Launch: All Signs Point to June 18

The whopping 41-megapixel camera phone Nokia 808 PureView from Finnish handset maker Nokia Corp. is set to hit the U.S. market on Monday, June 18, according to MarketWatch, citing "a person familiar with the company's plans."

Announced back in February, the Nokia 808 PureView handset was among the stars of the Consumer Electronics Show, ranked by many as one of the top handsets unveiled at the event. The handset's small display and Symbian operating system may be deemed as drawbacks, but as a camera phone, the Nokia 808 PureView easily stands out from all current handsets available on the market. It has a robust and solid construction, worthy of Nokia's fame for creating durable phones, but it is the camera that makes camera phone enthusiasts dream of this handset.

Several postings over the weekend on Nokia's U.S. Facebook page, such as "808 reasons to be excited about Monday," point to June 18 as the big day. The company even uploaded photos on Saturday touting the date 06.18.2012, indicating something big is on the way. According to MarketWatch, a "person familiar with Nokia's plans" said the company's postings on Facebook over the weekend refer to the launch of the highly-touted Nokia 808 PureView handset in the United States.

Featuring a camera sensor with a whopping 41-megapixel capacity, the 808 PureView comes far above any camera phone on the market. The PureView technology on which the device is based has taken five years to develop. For this reason, it is only compatible with Nokia's old Symbian OS, which the company is currently replacing with Microsoft's Windows operating system for smartphones in their joint partnership for Windows Phone.

Nokia's 808 PureView started shipping in May and is currently widely available in several markets across Europe and Asia, but a U.S. arrival has been shrouded in mystery. According to all indicators, however, the wait is about to end. The company has not made an official announcement yet, but the 808 PureView camera phone could hit the U.S. anytime now. Expect a strong, sturdy handset in Nokia's unmistakable style, offering even the un-professional photographer the chance to snap a gorgeous photo on the go.
