Samsung Galaxy Note7 Announces Battery Safety Recall Through Exchange Program

If you have bought your Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in the U.S. earlier than Sept.15, it is extremely important that you check your MEI or Serial number now. The IMEI or Serial number will determine if your Note 7 needs to be exchanged.

In order to know if your Note 7 is covered by the Exchange Program, you can check for the following:

1. Find your IMEI or Serial number by going to "Apps > Settings > About Phone or General Management > Status > IMEI information or Serial number" or check the back of your phone.

2. Enter your IMEI or Serial number here and check.

Once confirmed that you have bought the defective Galaxy Note 7, kindly you defer any usage of your device, turn it off and hand it over for exchange through the U.S. Note 7 Exchange Program.

The U.S. Note 7 Exchange Program allows you to:

1. Exchange your current Galaxy Note 7 with another Galaxy Note 7 that is approved by the CPSC which will be available no later than Sept. 21; or

2. Exchange your current Galaxy Note 7 with Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge with replacement of any Note 7  accessories with refund of the price difference between the devices; or

3. Contact point purchase in order to obtain refund.

Those customers who will turn in their Note 7 for exchange will receive a gift card worth $25, in-store credit, in-store accessory credit or bill credit from selected carriers retail outlets.

NOTE: This is to emphasize that the battery cell issue only applies to units of Galaxy Note 7 which are sold to the U.S. before Sept.15.

1 million mobile phones will be included in the recall. The defective units are said to pose safety hazards such as fire and burns upon over heating.

"I am urging all consumers to take advantage of this recall right away," said the CPSC Chairman, Elliot Kaye.
