PlayStation 4 Overall Sales Top Wii U In Japan; Xbox One Still Third

PlayStation 4 sales beat Wii U in Japan. Finally, after more than two years, Sony was able to encompass Wii U's rating in terms of its install base in the land of the rising sun. PS4 has cumulative lifetime sales of 3.267 million units. It was confirmed recently by Media Create that this number can be officially declared to have exceeded Wii U's install base in Japan which is 3.265 million units. For quite some time, the Wii was actually maintaining its top-selling status in the current-generation home console market within Japan. However, this time, PS4 was finally able to overtake Wii U's rankings.

According to the Gaming Bolt, PS4 is only beginning its journey through the market since it has only gotten its first major hit in Japan for just a few weeks' time. Persona 5, along with other major games like Final Fantasy 15, Kingdom Hearts 3, and Dragon Quest 11, are expected to also become major hits within the next months. Wii U seems to be buried with its ratings, along with Zelda: Breath of the Wild - as the only major title it possesses. Therefore, it can be assumed that the PS4 may continue to lead over the Wii U within the upcoming weeks.

On the other hand, Attack of the Fanboy reported that lifetime sales for Xbox One stands at 68, 224 units within Japan. Collectively, these three consoles have exhibited some worse cases as compared to their predecessors. The progress of the Japanese gaming console market may be challenged due to these concerns. However, due to the slow recovery of the PS4, including the upcoming release of the Nintendo NX, the gaming market may be able to regain from this challenging phase.
