Calcium Supplements May Harm The Heart And Vascular System, Study Finds

Calcium is known to be a substance that gives us strong bones and teeth. However, in a recent study, it shows that you can't be sure just yet as the scientific study finds that Calcium supplements can negatively impact the heart, which makes the calcium that we can directly get from the milk be much healthier and preferable instead.

As per CBS News, the authors of the study haven't directly proven yet that these supplements have an adverse effect on its consumers but the evidence that has been found in the study should be enough for the people to think twice before taking it.

In an interview from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, study lead author Dr. Erin Michos said that a lot of Americans think that it's better for them to take calcium supplements for bone health rather than the traditional way of drinking milk since they have the notion of having more is always better.

Michos added that as part of their study, it has been found that excessive intake of calcium supplement is actually harmful to the heart and vascular system.

According to Dr. John Anderson, professor emeritus of nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Gillings School of Global Public Health, the discrepancy may arise as to how the various types of calcium are being absorbed by the body.

Anderson further explained that in another research, it has shown that for older people, when calcium supplements are ingested,it actually doesn't make it to the skeletal system which is the primary reason for taking it. Instead, it just goes out directly in the form of urine and thus is being accumulated in the body's soft tissues.
