FDA Wants To Know How Much Nutella You Eat

The US FDA wants to know how much Nutella you eat. Currently, Nutella is classed under the category 'dessert topping' together with cholate syrup, marshmallow Fluff and treacle. Being in this category, the serving size of Nutella must be two tablespoons, which is equal to 200 calories.

After more than 2 years, last May, FDA updated its encompassing serving size policy on all categories of sweets. This is after the long years of collecting and analyzing nutrition data, eating habit surveys and public comments. But after finding of the new policy, Ferrero Rocher, the company of Nutella chocolate spread, asked the government to make a few adjustments.

According to Quartz, because Nutella and other nut-based cocoa spreads are considered “dessert toppings” by the government, they have to list higher serving sizes on their packaging. But Ferrero argues that Americans no longer primarily use Nutella on ice creams or with cookies, but instead on toast and sandwiches. So it’s asking the FDA to consider creating a brand new category for nut-based cocoa spreads or at the least categorize it as a “honey, jam, and jelly.”

The current serving size for Nutella is two tablespoon or equal to 200 calories. But Ferrero thinks a smaller serving size might make people more likely to grab a jar of the product from the store. Ferrero says that changing the guidelines will help people make conscious decisions based on how much Nutella they actually eat, reported by CNN.

"Ferrero's most recent advertising and promotion has advocated the consumption of a balanced breakfast with the inclusion of Nutella as a tasty, complementary spread to add on to nutrient-rich whole grain breads, fruits, and dairy products," the latest petition saysThe FDA may finally consider Nutella's claims, but only if the American people agree. That is why the FDA wants to know the amount of Nutella people eat every day.
