Apple 'Appstore.com' Shortlinks Debut In 'Star Trek' Super Bowl Ad

Apple's new "Appstore.com" shortlinks are just a few days old, but companies are already adopting Apple's new, easier way to direct consumers to the App Store. The new URL made it's public debut in the tail-end of an ad for the upcoming film Star Trek: Into Darkness that aired during the Super Bowl last night featured a link for the movie's iOS companion app.

Similar to iTunes URLs, the shortened Appstore.com links take users directly to a page where users can review and download the specified iOS app. Apple first announced the use of Appstore.com last week to "provide a simple way" for developers to promote their apps. According to Apple, Appstore.com links will be automatically assigned to apps during their App Store review process.

The final seconds of the Star Trek trailer inform viewers that they can "see the movie first" using the app, which serves as a hub for promotional content, including the new trailer.

According to MacRumors, Apple has purchased the Appstore.com URL just after the launch of App Store in 2008.
