Nexus Devices Get Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 Update

The Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 updates are rolling out for the Google brand GSM Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 devices. This is the first system update since late 2012; all Nexus devices were previously running on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1. According to reports, the OTA (over the air) update has some minor improvements to the system.

One of the known fixes so far is the fix of the Bluetooth issue that users often encountered during audio streaming. Some users report that there are still interruptions when streaming, just not as much as there was before. Currently, it's not clear if this lagging and cutting off during audio streaming is entirely fixed.

The update brings a new download notification bar that estimates the remaining download time left and also shows the download process as a percentage when downloading apps from the Play Store. An adjustment was also made to the quick settings user interface. Users can now use the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi selection buttons as toggles with long presses. A new sound feature to indicate wireless charging has been added. There is also a new sound for the low battery notification.

Google has not made an official announcement or issued a changelog of what fixes the update includes as it silently rolls out to Nexus users.

Nexus 4 smartphone devices are speculated to receive the Jelly Bean 4.2.2 update once the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets are all updated, but no word on this as of yet. Not all Nexus branded devices are able to run the new update due to lack of support from Google. The Nexus S for example, will not receive the 4.2.2 update since Google stopped offering support for it after the last update to Jelly Bean 4.2. Verizon's LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus was discontinued and will not receive the update either.

Although the latest Jelly Bean update is being offered to users over the air, not everyone will receive it right away. As in previous Android updates, it could be several months before some units receive the system update.
