Former Nintendo Executive Reveals Game Boy Advance Successor Was Almost Completed

Nintendo was reportedly developing a new handheld successor to the Game Boy Advance. The handheld, code named Game Boy IRIS was reportedly held back to make way for the multi-screened DS device instead. For now, Nintendo has released new images of Link of Legend of Zelda and a soundtrack as well.

No One Liked DS At First

As it turns out, it was the DS that may not have launched as the retired General Manager of the Nintendo Research and Engineering Satoru Okada previously noted that none from the handheld team favored the idea of the DS at first. Okada-san further noted that President Iwata himself did not think the DS made sense. Despite disapproval, the team reportedly pushed through with Project Nitro that was later launched as the Nintendo DS in 2004.

However, it was revealed that the Nintendo team was already working on the newest model of the Game Boy range with the code name IRIS like the flower. It was noted that the name was derived from the fifth of the month, May's symbol--the Iris. Note that the console would have been the fifth generation of Game Boy. Apparently, the development was diverted when Hiroshi Yamauchi introduced the idea of adding two screens to the console.

New Legend of Zelda Image Reveals The Land of Hyrule

Meanwhile, Nintendo welcomed 2017 with The Legend of Zelda images showing Link crouching on a hilltop overlooking the land of Hyrule. The photo also showed smoke billowing from the volcanic mountain at daybreak. In addition, Nintendo is slated to release a limited edition soundtrack with music from the entire Zelda timeline.

Nintendo has already confirmed pre-orders for the 1986 series soundtrack. The franchise's upcoming title Breath of the Wild is expected to arrive this year as it was already announced in the E3 2016. The title is expected to add Wolf Link as well as the Twilight Princess with amiibo features. Learn more about the Gameboy IRIS here:
