Windows Blue 8.1 Will Update Your Apps 'Silently'

There are plenty of new features and fun new aspects of Windows Blue 8.1 that we're hearing constantly these days as we await its imminent release. Now it seems as though we have one more feature to add to the growing list: Windows 8.1 will update your apps "silently."

This means the apps for Windows Blue 8.1 will update without your being bothered to have to agree. You'll just keep working on whatever you're doing and, boom, the Windows 8.1 apps are being updated.

The alleged feature for Windows 8.1 was relayed by Winbeta that explained in an article published on Sunday, May 5 that "Movie Moments, an app we know exists in build 9385, was recently and silently updated via Windows Update."

"The Movie Moments app got an unexpected facelift this weekend and now users have noticed that the app was updated to version 6.3.9394 after using Windows Update in Windows 8.1 Pro Preview build 9385," Winbeta went on to say in its report.

The site continued that there is an alternative "Movie Moments" title that appeared in the top left corner of the app's information. Before the silent update of the app, there appeared only nothing.

"Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Microsoft.MovieMoments," the Installation History of Windows Update read, cementing the fact that, yes, an update occurred for the Windows Blue 8.1 app.

Movie Moments isn't alone in the silent update realm, as other apps for Windows 8.1 that were similarly updated without anyone having noticed including: PlayReady Client, VCLibs Preview Internal and WinJS 2.0 Preview internal. They have version numbers ranging from 6.3.9345 to 6.3.9391.

Winbeta implies that the reason for the silent updating of Windows 8.1 apps might stem from the fact that the Windows Store has been criticized in the past for being too laborious to use.

"Microsoft seems to have noticed that it was always a hassle for users to manually update apps by going to the Windows Store," Winbeta says. "With this new feature implemented, Microsoft can allow apps to be updated silently, or even manually."
