HTC Windows Blue 8.1 RT Tablets Will Compete With iPad 5, Galaxy Note 8

HTC is pretty well known for its smartphones, but not too long ago, the company was also selling tablets. Many have wondered when HTC would remake an entrance into the tablet world, and now, new reports have revealed that HTC is getting back into the tablet game.

The new reports claim HTC will launch new tablets this year, although HTC hasn't released a new tablet since September 2011. Sources are reporting that HTC will be bringing two Windows RT tablets to the market. Don't worry, it's not the same Windows RT that's available on the Microsoft Surface RT or other Windows RT-based tablets.

The new HTC tablets will debut with Microsoft's upcoming and highly anticipated update to Windows 8, Windows Blue 8.1. The mobile operating system is currently being called "Windows RT Blue." The update is expected to offer speed optimizations, bug fixes and even more useful features to Windows 8.1. The two tablets are rumored to range in sizes from 7 to 12 inches. The codenames of the tablets are HTC R7 and HTC R12, and are believed to be codenamed for Windows RT tablets, due to the R in the name, instead of a full-blown Windows 8.1 tablet.

The codenamed HTC R7 is expected to be the 7-inch tablet with a full HD screen, sport a 2.3GHX quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 16GB of internal storage with a microSD slot for expansion, 2GB of RAM, 13-megpixel rear autofocus camera, possible HDMI, DLNA, NFC, a version with built-in LTE/HSPA+ radios, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.

The codenamed HTC R12 is expected to share similar specs with the HTC R7, but include a 12-inch HD 2048 x 1536 resolution display: this would give the tablet the same screen resolution as Apple's iPad Retina Display.

Sources also list an Oct. 13 tentative launch date, which just happens to fall in line with when Microsoft is expected to officially launch Windows Blue 8.1 to consumers.
