PlayStation 4 Games: Gran Turismo 6 Hitting Sony's PS4?

On Wednesday, Sony announced that Gran Turismo 6 would be arriving later this year for a holiday release, but it was interesting that the game wasn't announced for the PlayStation 4.

It would've made sense, wouldn't it? With Sony planning to launch the PlayStation 4 at the end of the year, Gran Turismo 6 would've been an enormous exclusive, enough to lay down a definitive marker between the PS4 and Microsoft's new Xbox. Instead, it's going to be released on the PS3.

However, that doesn't mean a PS4 version won't be coming at some point. When Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about the game after its official announcement, he essentially said that's the plan.

"We actually do have a PlayStation 4 version in mind," Yamauchi said, according to Eurogamer. "So for this holiday season, we thought that it would be best for users to release the PlayStation 3 version. I thought the best scenario would be to have the game come out, to have new content and new DLCs every month, and updates coming in for the game; and once players have thoroughly played out the system and played out the game, if the PlayStation 4 version just came out naturally in the progress, I think that's the best scenario."

In another bit of potentially good news, Yamauchi said you'd "probably" be able to transfer progress from the PS3 version to the PS4 title.

As for why Gran Turismo 6 is skipping the PS4 launch and landing on the PS3 first, Yamauchi said it actually makes a lot of sense.

"The 70 million global install base of PS3 to market to... that is obviously very compelling," he said. "It's not proper for me to talk about our internal economics too much, but an intelligent man will look at an install base of 70 million, and look at another platform with an install base of zero, and you can quickly work out where the economic potential lies."

Even though Gran Turismo 6 will be the second title in the series to hit the PS3, Yamauchi said that there will be a substantial difference in the graphics between the two.

"If you look at the difference between GT and GT2, and GT3 and GT4, the change is not incremental. It's absolutely massive," he said. "We're very confident that you'll see the step change between GT5 and GT6 as on the previous platform iterations. So there's that: a sense of very much unfinished business on PS3."
