[RETRO GAMING] Remember the 'Dino Crisis' Series?

Along with Capcom's best-selling "Resident Evil" series, it is important to note that the game developer also has another popular survival horror series we hadn't seen in a while: "Dino Crisis."

However, there are no spefic announcements yet whether any games under the series will be released on the current-gen consoles.

What is the 'Dino Crisis' Series?

"Dino Crisis" is a video game series developed by Capcom. The first game, whose name is the same as the series, was released in 1999, per Dino Crisis Fandom.

The game, which was created by Shinji Mikami, was inspired by Resident Evil's RPG aspects, such as equipment management and adventure.

To further emphasize, Game Rant added that Capcom has established itself as a major creator of survival horror titles throughout the years, particularly with its hugely successful "Resident Evil" series. Since "Dino Crisis" became an instant smash hit for the Japanese company, it had the potential to rival "Resident Evil's" success.

With the increasing success of "Resident Evil" in the late 1990s, Capcom was at the top of the industry.

Capcom had already enjoyed the financial prosperity of the first "Resident Evil" title and was working on the second when the first "Dino Crisis" game was released. The success of "Resident Evil" encouraged Capcom to repeat the technique on a new IP, which gave birth to "Dino Crisis."

Capcom didn't even try to hide the fact that "Dino Crisis" was spawned from "Resident Evil," as the original Dino Crisis game's box art openly said, "From the developers of Resident Evil."

Unlike previous "Resident Evil clones" published since 1997, "Dino Crisis" depended on 3D settings rather than pre-rendered backdrops, and a larger emphasis on physical puzzles to progress through the videogame.

"Dino Crisis" rejected the designation of "Survival Horror" in Japan, which was considered only as a tagline for "Resident Evil," because horror-themed action-adventure gaming was still in its existence. Instead, it was dubbed "Panic Horror" to emphasize its uniqueness.

'Dino Crisis' Video Games

When Capcom noticed that the "Dino Crisis" became a sucess, the developer immediately released a follow-up series.

Capcom released "Dino Crisis 2" one year after the previous game, and this is when everything started to unravel. Even though numerous fans welcomed the series warmly, "Dino Crisis" 2 sold less than its original.

The sequel also took a bold step away from the survival horror style that made "Dino Crisis" a hit, transforming into a fast-paced action-adventure game.

Despite this, "Dino Crisis 2" was a popular sequel since it was based in the same universe as the previous game and followed the tale of Regina, the game's heroine, as well as introducing Dylan, the sequel's main protagonist.

Capcom followed up with "Dino Stalker," a Gun Survivor spin-off game. "Dino Stalker" was a spin-off title that didn't add much to the franchise's general narrative and didn't advance the tale ahead, which is why some "Dino Crisis" fans chose to skip it and wait for "Dino Crisis 2."

"Dino Crisis 3" was released in 2003, and it was at this point that the once-loved franchise began to fall out of favor.

In addition, the third franchise sold even less copies than its predecessors, with roughly 580,000 copies sold by the end of 2003, and generally mediocre and negative reviews.

Will 'Dino Crisis' Make a Comeback?

In another Game Rant report, it has been argued that the moment has come to reboot the "Dino Crisis" franchise.

First and foremost, the remake of "Resident Evil" 2 has been a huge success, selling more over 5 million copies so far, surpassing the 4.96 million copies released on the original PlayStation.

Because the remake of "Resident Evil" 2 has only been released for a year, the period is worth considering while analyzing these figures. While the remake drew in long-time Resident Evil fans, it also drew in new ones, maybe from a younger generation of gamers who had never played the original.

If the original "Dino Crisis" was rebuilt and proved out to be a good game, it might easily outsell the 2.4 million copies it sold on PlayStation. As the remake of "Resident Evil" 2 revealed, there is enough of space to attract new fans rather than relying solely on existing ones.
