Sony unveils its latest headset, the PlayStation VR2.

One year after introducing the PlayStation VR2, Sony has officially released the design of their next headset. The PlayStation VR2 was first announced in February 2021, but the design was not revealed until now.

According to Sony, while the PS VR2 has a comparable appearance to its predecessor, its shape is more akin to the brand new Sense controllers. Sony drew influence for the design of the PS5 generation of gaming consoles as well.

Unlike the DualSense controller, the new headset uses the same color scheme as the PlayStation 5. It also has rounded edges, similar to the PS5's.

PlayStation VR 2 Specs

As reported by The Verge, Sony's PlayStation VR was the first affordable virtual reality headset.

The very first wave of consumer virtual reality headsets, alongside the original Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, both of which have had numerous successors with significant improvements in optical quality, the field of view, and overall immersion since then.

Nowadays, users can only walk around an extremely small space directly in front of their PS4 and interact with virtual worlds with a pair of wands.

Since the first PS VR and its PlayStation Move controllers, VR hardware has advanced significantly, and Sony must now demonstrate that it can still deliver an engaging experience.

Furthermore, aside from the PlayStation VR2, Sony now competes with HTC's Vive and Meta's Oculus Quest.

Meta's Oculus Quest 2 is a virtual reality headset that is currently among the best available on the market. The Oculus Quest is good for both new and experienced virtual reality users. The Quest VR is also well-known for being lightweight, comfortable, and powerful, among other qualities. The price of this VR headset ranges from $299 to $399.

Another excellent VR headset on the market is the HTC Vive, which, despite its higher price, has received a lot of positive feedback from players who appreciate its full immersion. The HTC Vive is available for purchase for $300 to $1,399.

Furthermore, when it comes to the PlayStation PS VR2, the company has not yet announced the product's public release date and selling price.

According to CNBC, Sony executive Hideaki Nishino stated that their goal is to design a headset that will deeply immerse users in the gaming world where players will forget they are using a headset or controller.

He notes that the new headset will support sharp 4K graphics and head-tracking. Aside from that, they also designed the PS VR2 to become an attractive part of a user's living room decor.

Sony also added that the new product would have a lens adjustment dial, so users may match the lens distance between their eyes to optimize their perspective.

Nishino also said that the launch of PS VR2 will make progress the virtual reality forward and change the way games are being played.
