D-Day Anniversary: World War II Documentaries You Can Watch on Netflix to Commemorate the Normandy Landings

World War II is one of the parts of history that no human should want to go through again. One of the crucial events that spelled the end of the war happened today in 1944. It is known as the Normandy landings, otherwise known as D-Day.

To commemorate the 78th anniversary of D-Day, we have put together a list of World War II documentaries that you can stream on Netflix. This documentaries show not only the events of D-Day, but also the other important events of World War II.

'#AnneFrank - Parallel Stories'

One of the most well-known victims of the Holocaust, Anne Frank's story, especially of her life in hiding with her family, has been preserved and shared to the world thanks to her diary. Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren tells Anne's story, as recorded in her diary, in the documentary "#AnneFrank - Parallel Stories."

Her life as shown in her diary is retold along with the stories of five other victims of the Holocaust. Unlike Anne Frank, these victims survived.

'Camp Confidential: America's Secret Nazis'

Did you know that the US military had a camp near Washington where Nazi prisoners of war (POWs) were interrogated by Jewish soldiers?

"Camp Confidenial: America's Secret Nazis" is an animated short that tels us all about that military camp. Only 35 minutes long, it features World War II veterans who discuss the secret camp.

'Five Came Back'

During World War II, many private citizens opted to join the war effort. The three-episode series "Five Came Back" shines the spotlight on five Hollywood directors who enlisted in the armed forces. These are Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston, George Stevens, and William Wyler.

These directors were talked to document World War II and their works are analyzed in the documentary series by some of today's biggest filmmakers, including Francis Ford Coppola, Guillermo del Toro, Paul Greengrass, Lawrence Kasdan, and Steven Spielberg.

'Greatest Events of WWII in Colour'

If you are looking for World War II documentary that makes use of restored archive, you cannot go wrong with "Greatest Events of WWII in Colour." Historians likewisefeature in this documentary series to provide greater, deep insights into the most pivotal events of the war.

"Greatest Events of WWII in Colour" devotes its sixth episode entirely on D-Day. Other crucial moments of World War II covered in the documentary include Pearl Harbor, Battle of Midway, and the bombing of Hiroshima.

'WWII in Color: Road to Victory'

Another documentary that features archival footage as well as commentary from historians "WWII in Color: Road to Victory" focuses on the critical events that led to the victory of the Allied powers during World War II.

The documentary series has 10 episodes and features Dunkirk, the liberation of Paris, and the Battle of the Philippine Sea, among others.
