Facebook Is Experiencing a Glitch; Spams Celebrity Comments Everywhere

Celebrities on Facebook are getting a bit too chatty on the platform.

Facebook is currently experiencing a bizarre glitch that's filling user feeds with posts from celebrity accounts and random people they don't follow, per The Verge and Newsweek.

The effect of Facebook's glitch is still ongoing; it has yet to be resolved as of the publication of this article.

Facebook Comment Glitch Details

People all over social media are reporting that they are seeing endless posts from people they are not following, such as celebrities and people they don't follow.

In a thread on r/technology tackling the matter, some users even thought that their accounts were hacked, and have taken steps to prevent a similar incident.

These Redditors changed their password on their Facebook accounts before they knew that Facebook's weird behavior was due to a glitch.

Facebook users have also sounded the alarm on Twitter, with them posting screenshots of their feeds that are filled with one-liner comments from celebrities like Eminem, Billie Eilish, Neymar Jr., and others.

Twitter Error

One of these Twitter users is @chrismearle, who posted a screenshot of his Facebook feed showing posts from Eminem and Billie Eilish.

Thankfully not everyone is affected by the glitch. Manik Berry of Fossbytes found that they weren't affected by the glitch and that the fact they aren't shouldn't be surprising.

Berry mentioned in the article they wrote that the exclusion means that not all users are affected but are seeing posts tagged to celebrities they follow on the mobile app and desktop site.

On the other hand, some people took advantage of the ongoing internet chaos and have created memes to send to celebrities and/or criticize Facebook's inability to address the situation quickly.

Although the glitch isn't caused by an outage, Facebook went to DownDetector to report Facebook's weird problem just before 2 AM ET.

Metro also found a similar trend, with the website stating that 43% of users have issues with the app, while 40% have problems with their feed. 16% of people who reported the problem on DownDetector mentioned that there is a problem affecting the website.

On the other hand, a status dashboard for Meta is reporting that there are no known issues on Facebook. However, a Meta spokesperson told Newsweek that the company is aware that people are having trouble with their Facebook feed and is already "working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."

What Is Causing The Problem For Facebook?

While waiting for Facebook to fix the issue, people have speculated some reasons for what's causing the glitch to occur.

Redditor WhitelabelDnD, the original poster of the thread from r/technology, alleges that Facebook broke the news feed algorithm accidentally, giving posts to high-profile accounts from strangers with "absurdly high weighting."

As a result, the posts are forced to be shown to everybody following that page.

Fossbytes theorizes that the glitch is due to a bug that occurs when someone decides to tag a celebrity in a post, everyone following that celebrity sees the post.
