Aside from the two rivals, Toad also features in the trailer. You can also catch a brief glimpse of Mario's brother, Luigi.

As far as the setting of the movie is concerned, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" trailer gives the audience a first look at the Mushroom Kingdom. Eurogamer says in its report that the trailer introduces "a striking take on the Mushroom Kingdom that's at once familiar and quite unlike anything we've seen in the games before - the vertiginous Toad town beneath a looming Peach's castle being a particular highlight."
