Amazon launches new Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX tablets

Amazon has launched a new Kindle Fire HD along with the refreshed versions of the 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX tablets.

Amazon was one of the first companies to launch a 7-inch tablet, but it now faces strong competition from the likes of Apple, Google and Samsung. Moreover, OEM's such as Microsoft are also expected to launch a compact Surface Mini tablet in the market soon.

"It's been just two years since we introduced the first Kindle Fire, and the team is innovating at an unbelievable speed," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. "2.2 GHz processor, 339 ppi display, new 34% lighter design, Fire OS 3.0, and new exclusive features like the Mayday button, X-Ray for Music, Second Screen, and Prime Instant Video downloads. We've worked hard to pack this much hardware, innovation, and customer obsession into these prices."

The new Kindle Fire HD is available in 8/16GB storage options and has a price tag of $139/$169 with a special offer (special offers and sponsored screensaver display on the Kindle Fire lock screen). If you want to buy the tablet without the special offer the price increases to $154/$184. Amazon has already started accepting pre-orders for the tablet, which will start shipping from Oct. 2.

The new Kindle Fire HDX 7" is available in 16/32/64GB internal storage options and the Wi-Fi only version is available for $226/$269/$309 with the special offer. If you want to buy the tablet without the special offer you'll end up spending $244/$284/$324. You'll have to splash an additional $100 if you want to buy the tablet with the 4G LTE option. Pre-orders for the device have already started and the release date for the Wi-Fi version will be Oct. 18, while the 4G LTE version will release on Dec. 10.

The new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" is also available in 16/32/64GB on-board storage options and the Wi-Fi variant of the tablet is priced at $379/$429/$479 with the special offer. If you want the device without special offer you'll end up spending an additional $20. Just like the 7-inch version, the 8.9-inch model is also available in a 4G LTE variant and customers will have to pay an extra $100. Pre-orders for the 8.9-inch model have also started, with the Wi-Fi only version having a release date of Nov. 7 and the LTE version to be released on Dec. 10.
