Super Mario Odyssey Helps Cure Depression

In a study conducted by German researchers, it was found that 3D video games have the potential to help reduce symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). It is often accompanied by depressed mood, memory issues, and decreased motivation.

The test was conducted on 46 clinically depressed individuals who were grouped into three teams. The first group was trained to play Super Mario Odyssey on Nintendo Switch, a treatment-as-usual group, and a group that used a cognitive exercise program.

Based on the limited sample size, the study concluded that playing 3D video games like Super Mario Odyssey can help increase motivation to continue treatment and improve visuospatial memory functions for people diagnosed with MDD.

Video Games as Form of Therapy

The authors of the study acknowledge the limitations of their results. Moreover, they encourage that more studies should be performed to test the link between 3D gaming and MDD. Regardless, there is a potential for the utilization of video games to help patients.

On the other hand, psychology professionals are also looking for other games to be studied. For instance, one recent study claimed that Skyrim increases mindfulness for gamers. An Oxford study also revealed that playing games could be good for mental health in general.

Despite its potential to help lessen depression, there are still threats of gaming addiction, especially for people who eventually become too dependent on playing games.
