Samsung’s New Smart Rings Might be More Comfortable than Smart Watches

We are at an age where companies are racing to create the next best wearable smart device. Smartwatches are all the rage since you can practically wear them anywhere and they can monitor your health as you do. Now, Samsung has come forth with a more convenient device.

Samsung's Galaxy Ring

The company did not reveal much about its new Galaxy Ring as it teased the existence of the device during the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event this January 2024. But, it might be enough for people to become excited about its new smart device.

Like smartwatches, the smart ring has small sensors inside the band that can help track the vitals of its wearer. It was after the event that a bit more information was revealed by Samsung spokesperson Amber Reaver.

She stated that the ring is meant to "empower more people to manage their health with a comprehensive yet simplified approach to everyday wellness at home," as reported by The Verge. "Simplified" is certainly the appropriate description.

Rings can be more subtle than watches, and with their size, they may even be less likely to break. Reaver said that the ring is equipped with leading sensor technologies and can be worn 24/7, unlike smartwatches that are not waterproof.

During the Unpacked event, attendees had the chance to inspect the new device up close. It was said that the device was light and could fit sizes up to 13. It also had three finishes that potential buyers could choose from.

For people who want their vitals monitored, this could certainly be a good way to do so, especially with all the chaos surrounding the leading smartwatch model as Apple faces patent infringement lawsuits regarding its blood oxygen technology.

Existing Smart Rings

Samsung is not the first to release a smart ring. It just so happens that it has gotten more attention since it's backed by the popularity of the company's name. Oura already has the same device and has made its debut back in 2015.

Just like the latest model of smartwatches, it is capable of monitoring your heart rate, body temperature, and overnight blood oxygen level, along with 20 other biometric features. It is also water-resistant and lightweight, making it possible to wear the ring 24/7.

Oura CEO Tom Hale stated that the company has the strongest IP portfolio when it comes to both software and hardware, boasting that it has 100 granted patents, 270 pending patent applications, and more than 130 registered trademarks.

That's expected since it has almost been a decade since its smart ring was first revealed. As for whether it has the best software and hardware, that remains to be seen until Samsung does release its Galaxy Ring.

It's already a given that the Samsung smart ring will link better with its devices, meaning that it will be easier to monitor the data that it picks up. The company is also known for its creation of quality products based on its smart devices and appliances.
