Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ is Removing a Major Plot Point

We're only a few weeks away from the release of Netflix's live adaptation of "Avatar: The Last Airbender," and we don't yet know what the show has in store. There is one revelation from showrunner Albert Kim, and it might be a deal breaker for some.

It Might Not Have the Epic Battle We're Expecting

We're less than a month away from the release of the show, and we will soon see how Netflix will fare with the live adaptation. Fans are willing to give the series a chance after M. Night Shyamalan's movie adaptation (which fans continue to disregard).

We're not off to a great start after hearing that the animated show's creators, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, decided to leave the project due to "creative differences," and now, reports say that Netflix might be removing one major factor in the plot, Sozin's Comet.

Albert Kim says that the celestial event will be removed for now. The timeline of the animated series took place in the span of a year, and while writers can make the gang young as long as they want, that's impossible for a live-action series.

The cast of the show is at that age where a couple of years will show a huge difference in appearance. As mentioned in Gizmodo, Gordon Cormier and Kiawentiio (Aang and Katara) are now 14 and 17 years old, respectively.

The one year it took to prepare Aang for the ultimate battle between him and Fire Lord Ozai was spread out over three seasons. By the third, if the show does manage to get that far, Gordon Cormier will have turned into a young man.

Kim said that the team "couldn't know exactly how old our actors would be for the subsequent seasons," and that they hope they can account for "all of those fun things that happen to real-life human beings that don't happen to animated characters."

If we were to base how much time would have passed from how they have grown, then the timeline toward Sozin's Comet would be inaccurate, as the show mentioned that the celestial event was to occur within a year.

Why Sozin's Comet is Important

The other Avatars before Aang took many years before they mastered all four elements, but Aang and the others were rushing towards a deadline due to the looming comet. In case you don't know, comets amplify the power of firebenders.

The comet was named after Fire Lord Sozin, who used their amplified powers to wipe out the Air Nomads. The current Fire Lord, Ozai intended to use it to his advantage as well as he planned to wipe out the Earth Kingdom.

Without the comet, it's unclear how the series finale will play out. Without it, we won't see an overpowered Ozai fighting Aang, as well as Zuko and Azula's epic Agni Kai showdown. The showrunners may find a way to add the celestial event back to the plot, and we really hope they do.
