4 Netflix Documentaries About Ancient Historical Figures

We have been around for hundreds of thousands of years, yet we only ever evolved into civilized beings about 6,000 years ago. In that time, relatively few individuals have made their marks in history because of all their accomplishments or cruelty, and here are documentaries where you can learn about them.

1. 'Queen Cleopatra'

This particular documentary has received a lot of hate due to many alleged inaccuracies, particularly focusing on Cleopatra's race. Still, the docuseries included a lot of accurate facts and events based on existing records.

As indicated in the title, the series will mainly focus on the last ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty. However, Cleopatra's life was intertwined with many other important figures such as Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, both of which will play huge parts in the series as well.

2. 'Alexander: The Making of a God'

One of the most prominent names in the history of ancient Greece was Alexander the Great, as he headed one of the most successful military forces the world has seen. He managed to build an army so big that aided him in his conquests.

What's more impressive is that he did all this by 30. Not only does the series follow his military accomplishments, but it starts as early as his inheriting the throne after his father was assassinated, which eventually leads to him creating a massive empire that he ruled.

3. 'Rise of Empires: Ottoman'

Also a docudrama, the series tells the story of the bloody campaign of Mehmed the Conqueror and his actions that led to the Fall of Constantinople. It's an insightful perspective to witness how the Ottoman Empire gained power during the 16th up to the 18th century.

You'll get to meet familiar historical figures like Vlad the Impaler, who was the former Voivode of Wallachia, now known as southern Romania. Known for his cruel methods of punishment and slaughter, the show leads to Vlad the Impaler and Mehmed the Conqueror's forces battling for the land of Wallachia.

The docuseries tells the story of not one, but three famous and infamous rulers in the history of the Roman Empire. The first season will be about Commodus, who is known to be the ruler who ended the golden age of the empire due to his cruelty and dictatorial leadership.

The second season is about Julius Caesar. He was regarded as a brilliant mind, especially in battle strategies. He was involved in many wars, both civil and battles outside of Rome. Also resorting to a dictatorship, rivals began plotting against him to take back power which led to the reign of the first Roman Emperor.

The third season focuses next on Caligula, also known as Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus. He was called mad for his actions, which included cruel punishments, high taxes, and even the assassination of senators he did not trust. With his abhorrent behavior, he joined the long line of Roman rulers who were assassinated.
