Airbnb Bans Indoor Security Camera Installation on Rentals, Even on Common Areas

Airbnb announced in its latest update that indoor security cameras will be prohibited in listings globally, starting April 30.

Previously, the company had a different policy that allowed rental owners to install security cameras in common areas like hallways, living rooms, and front doors.

Airbnb Updates Rental Privacy Involving Security Cameras

In an update post, Airbnb explained that the new policy is part of the company's effort to enhance and simplify the policy on security cameras and other devices. The company also emphasized the need to prioritize the privacy of the customers.

"These changes were made in consultation with our guests, Hosts, and privacy experts, and we'll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community," said Juniper Downs, head of community policy and partnerships at Airbnb.

Prior to the update, security cameras were allowed under the condition of placing them within common areas. In addition, hosts must disclose on the listing page that the rental place has security cameras. Airbnb assured that most listings do not have a security camera and that the updated policy will only affect a small population of hosts.

Airbnb Revises Policy on Noise Monitors

Airbnb also revisited its policy on outdoor security cameras and noise decibel monitors. Doorbell cameras and monitors are still permitted under the new policy.

The company defended that these devices provide an effective way for hosts to monitor security on their property and avoid unauthorized parties. However, disclosure of the devices must still be included in the listing.

"Hosts are also required to disclose the presence of noise decibel monitors, which assess decibel level only and do not record or transmit sounds or conversations and are only allowed in common spaces of listings," the company added.
