iPhone 6 Plus keeps crashing, reports continue to pile up

Some owners of the larger iPhone 6 Plus smartphone are still experiencing issues with their handsets, reporting frequent crashes and errors.

Apple unveiled its latest smartphones back in September, and the iPhone 6 Plus is the largest of the two. Boasting a 5.5-inch display, the iPhone 6 Plus is also the largest iPhone to date, and has drawn lots of interest ever since its debut.

At the same time, the iPhone 6 Plus has also stirred a lot of controversy since its launch, with various issues marring the experience. The whole #bendgate fiasco was the most prominent issue, but customers faced other problems as well.

One of the persisting issues affecting some iPhone 6 Plus units seems to be frequent crashing, believed to be software-related.

"I am a huge Apple fan, so I ask this question wishing and hoping my iPhone 6 Plus would just perform the way I know it should perform.

Since restoring from my old iPhone 5S backup onto my 6 Plus 128GB (AT&T) running iOS 8.0, my 6 Plus is laggy (animations are very slow and stutter), freezy (after hitting 'done' it often freezes for a good five seconds before registering the click), buggy (the keyboard sometimes doesn't appear at all, the 'halos' around the folders on the home screen sometimes appear and sometimes don't, seems totally arbitrary), crashy (whenever doing certain tasks like fast app switching, trying to change wallpaper, and others, the phone crashes, turns off the radios, then shows the Apple screen before rebooting). The crashing is happening once every five to ten minutes, making the phone VERY FRUSTRATING TO USE," one user wrote on Apple's Support Forums last month, on Sept. 21.

"I have tried manually restarting the phone, HOME + SLEEP reset to the Apple screen, and restoring again... My next step is a factory reset and manual reinstallation of all my apps again, which is making me sick just thinking about it... All of these things scream SOFTWARE to me, but what do I know... is anyone else experiencing these issues on the 6 Plus? Should I be waiting for an OS update, or did I just get a lemon phone? As I said, I love Apple, and this is not a post to flame (so please save your 'Go buy an Android' for someone who cares). I just want my shiny new phone to work!!! Any help is appreciated."

The thread in question kept growing ever since, and even now, more than one month later, iPhone 6 Plus users are still reporting similar issues with the phone. Apple has released iOS updates in the meantime, but each time new issues arose, making things even worse.

"I consider iOS 8 to be the worst tested, and most bug ridden release of iOS ever. Extremely poor performance by Apple," another disgruntled user wrote on the thread.

"Similar situation - iphone 6+ 128 GB restored from previous iphone 5s, 10GB free, >700 apps. Resprings once or three times a day, usually when using notifications but sometimes in apps or sometimes at home screens. Once did a hard reboot but mostly back up and ready in about 20 seconds. Figured it was a general IOS problem but seems to be something specific. Would have apple switch the phone for me if I thought it would solve it but doesn't seem to be a general consensus. Will try apple support and see what they say," reads one of the latest message on the thread, posted on Oct. 23.

It remains unclear at this point just what exactly causes these frequent crashes, but it seems that most users who reported such issues are using the 128GB version of the iPhone 6 Plus. On the other hand, owners of other models of the smartphone have also reported similar issues.

Some iPhone 6 Plus owners have reportedly taken their devices back to an Apple Store and received replacements. Other consumers, meanwhile, are still waiting for their repair ticket to be escalated so Apple solves their problem.

Apple, for its part, has yet to comment on the matter, or even acknowledge the issue, although reports of iPhone 6 Plus crashes continue to pile up.
