Google Drops Its Oculus Rift, Lets The HTC Vive Rule Market

The virtual reality platform is growing. Companies have already started to cash in on the developing trend, with the main competition having been between the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. Google had started on making its own version of a VR Headset, but has since opted out of the market, leaving the competition as is.

According to Hot Hardware, Google had initially thought to create its own Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. However, it has since abandoned its plans to focus on something else. It definitely wasn't stiff competition that drove Google away. In fact, it was foresight.

The good news is that Google is still working on virtual reality - mobile VR. The company understands that the interest in VR headsets is growing. After all, sales for the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive have been increasing, with the Vive getting a major share of the market. However, Google sees that a great majority of the public already owns smartphones and that many of these people are not ready to make such a big investment on VR.

As such, Google has decided to cash in on a mount for these smartphones instead. It really is a very logical choice, considering the proliferation of smartphones. Because smart devices are popularly used, VR is practically at everyone's fingertips. Google is just creating the bridge for it.

Android Authority notes that Google's initial plan for entering the virtual reality world was actually two-fold. One route was the standalone VR headset, while the one they are pushing forward with is called Daydream. The first Daydream headsets, for the VR Mobile platform, will be ready this Fall.

Daydream will be compatible with a number of smartphones from popular manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, HTC and ZTE. In fact, the ZTE Axon 7 will be the first phone that will be Daydream compatible. Fortunately, the Axon 7 will be released by the end of this month.
