New Sony XAV-AX100 Is Compatible With Both Apple CarPlay And Android Auto

Although it is difficult to state its name, the XAV-AX100 is making waves in the infotainment systems industry. The new device from Sony is, for the first time, compatible with both the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. But the variety in support is not the only thing that sets this new entrant apart from its competitors.

As C|Net's Road Show states, the XAV-AX100 has plenty to offer. These include connectivity options that go beyond the phone and whatever operating system it runs on. In fact, Sony included Bluetooth connectivity, input from a rearview camera, triple pre-out expandability and a 10-band graphic equalizer. However, it does lack and AUX port, and sports only one USB port at the back of the unit.

However, the XAV-AX100 does appeal to older car units, because while the device cannot be retrofitted, its 6.4-inch screen is still easy to manipulate. What makes it even more efficient is that the screen comes with a touch panel. However, International Business Times notes that the screen is somewhat resistive, but the issue is dodged as the unit also has physical buttons.

The physical buttons are very straight forward. The topmost button takes the user back to the home screen. Meanwhile, the large rotating button for the volume and the two smaller buttons are for skipping forwards and backwards.

The 6.4-inch screen has a resolution of 800x480 pixels. And while it is a humble feature, it is definitely at par with other current in-car displays.

What is most important, however, is the sound that the device delivers. The powerful sound from the XAV-AX100 comes from its 4x 55W amp that comes with Sony's Extra Bass feature. In addition, the downward firing door speakers are improved by the Dynamic Stage Organizer feature.

The Sony XAV-AX100 is priced only at $499.
