Overwatch Competitive Play Update: Blizzard to Return Sudden Death?

Overwatch competitive matches resulting in a draw occurs rarely. However, Blizzard may decide to return the Sudden Death feature in the game if enough players experience it.

No Sudden Death in Overwatch Season 2

Overwatch matches resulting in a draw are rare in the game, according to a blog post by Game Director Jeff Kaplan. He added that draws only account six percent of the time. This is probably Blizzard's justification in removing the Sudden Death feature to settle draw matches.

Overwatch Players' Complaint of Draw Matches

Recently, a number of Overwatch competitive players complained that their successive matches have ended in draws. They posted their complaints in the official Overwatch blog. Fortunately, Kaplan posted a reply. He conceded that draws do occur but insist that getting them in a row does not occur frequently.

Blizzard Contemplating Return of Sudden Death

Kaplan said that the Overwatch game development people are doing their best to reduce the chances of matches ending in draws. He conceded however, that if enough players complain about the draw then, Blizzard may decide to return the Sudden Death feature.

How Important is Sudden Death in Overwatch Competitive Matches?

In Overwatch season 2 competitive plays, none of the opposing team will get any points if the match ends in a draw. Sudden Death will be forced the team to continue the match until a winner is declared.

Some players also argue that teams should be awarded points even if the match ends in a draw. They argue that if Blizzard accedes to such idea, there is no need to return Sudden Death in the game. Players however, are divided over the reward of points to teams whose matches ended in a draw. For now, Overwatch players will just have to wait and see Blizzard's decision on this one.
