Why Skyrim: Special Edition Mods Are Restricted To 1GB On The PS4 While Xbox One Gets 5GB

Just a few days away from Skyrim: Special Edition release and the gaming community can then finally get their hands on the latest Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim game. For those living under a rock, Bethesda's Skyrim was first released 5 years ago and it has already been through 3 DLCs and a Legendary Edition where it compiles all the Skyrim game contents into one. And now, fans of the action RPG can expect the game to be more immersive with its enhanced graphics and mod support with the Special Edition.

Skyrim: Special Edition Mods

In a FAQ released by Bethesda, they clarified that Skyrim Special Edition mods content is specifically limited to 1 GB space for the PS4 and 5GB for the Xbox One. The mod size differences between the two consoles continued with Fallout 4 wherein the action-survival RPG offers 900MB mods space for PS4 and a 2GB mods space for the Xbox One.

Why PS4 has a lower space for Skyrim mods than the Xbox One?

Now before you shout "unfair!" and decide to trade your PS4 for an Xbox One because you think that a 1GB space for Skyrim mods is too small, Bethesda explained that the game will not allow PS4 mods that will use external assets, such as textures made by fans, unlike the Xbox One. Anyway, you can always delete them and install new mods. Additionally, Skyrim assets were reported to be small, even just under 1MB, as reported by Eurogamer.

PS4 Mod Limitations

The most important thing here is, after months of delays, Bethesda finally admitted that Sony will not anymore provide mod support for Skyrim: Special Edition and Fallout 4 for the PlayStation 4. And after a couple of months, the publisher announced to the delight of gamers that game mods will finally come to PS4 - but with limitations. These game mod limitations for the PS4 included size aspects - capped at 900mb for mod content, which explained the limited size offered.

Anyway, Fallout 4 PS4 mods has been out for months now and it will soon have more updates including a PS4 Pro support once Skyrim is complete, according to Bethesda. Skyrim: Special Edition will launch on Oct. 28 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
