Samsung Vs Apple: Supreme Court Decision On Patent Dispute With Apple Reversed Giving Samsung The Win

The tables have been turned, for now. After years of squabbling in and out of court, Samsung finally won against Apple.

After a lower court ordered Samsung to pay Apple for stealing the iPhones designs, the decision has been reversed by the Supreme Court. The ruling, which was made on Tuesday, says the Korean tech company no longer owes Apple the amount of $399 million in damages. The original amount Samsung was ordered to pay Apple 4 years ago was a little over $1 billion.

Apple took Samsung to court back in2011 after the former accused the latter of copying the design of the iPhone. Samsung was accused of violating three of Apple's design patents including the shape and the use of colorful icons.

According to reports, the court led by Justice Sonia Sotomayor came up with an 8-0 verdict favoring Samsung.

9to5Mac released an update on its original story about the Supreme Court Decision and it said that Apple has finally responded.

"The question before the Supreme Court was how to calculate the amount Samsung should pay for their copying. Our case has always been about Samsung's blatant copying of our ideas, and that was never in dispute. We will continue to protect the years of hard work that has made iPhone the world's most innovative and beloved product. We remain optimistic that the lower courts will again send a powerful signal that stealing isn't right."

Despite this pronouncement from Apple, Samsung is still taking the decision as a victory.

The positive piece of news came at the right time for the tech giant. Samsung has been embroiled in controversy after controversy this year. First, there was the exploding Galaxy Note 7 fiasco which forced the company to halt production of the device and lose tons of potential income. That was followed by a recall of 2.8 million top-load washing machines due to the possibility of its cover to detach from the body and hurt someone.

The recent discovery of the real reason behind the exploding batteries after a number of speculations can also be taken as a positive sign. This means the company now has closure with the controversial smartphone and can now manufacture devices that will no longer have the same problem as the Note 7.
