‘Riverdale' Updates: Season 2 Gets Major Genre Change; Might Be Supernatural With Sabrina And Zombies

Fans of the new The CW television series, “Riverdale” are in for a treat with the latest updates. The series has already been given an early renewal, securing a second season. However, the showrunner has revealed that the next season will go through a major change.

“Riverdale” Season 2 Will Have A Different Genre

“Riverdale” has been doing great so far thanks to a good cast, which includes the fan favorite Cole Sprouse, who plays the role of Jughead Jones. “Riverdale” is based on the characters of the popular comic book series, Archie Comics. However, they television series did not stick to the original stories and instead went with a teenage mystery thriller series.

“Riverdale” Season 1 has only aired seven episodes so far and after a hiatus, it will be returning with the eighth episode this March 30, which will focus on the Blossom family and probably give more light on Jason Blossom’s murder. It’s most likely that the murder case will get confusing this season since series creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has revealed that the second season will definitely go through a major element genre change. He further pointed out that the genre change will make fans say, “They’re not really doing that, are they?” because he emphasized that the surprise is surely happening.

“Riverdale” Season 2 Will Have Sabrina And Zombies?

The first season of “Riverdale” aired a scene where Cherry Blossom was haunted by her brother, who showed up in her dream looking like a zombie. Thanks to this brief scene, a fan theory has brewed up speculating that the said show might just head on to adapt the ongoing comic book series, “Afterlife With Archie”, which is written by Aguirre-Sacasa and the story is set in an alternative reality of zombie apocalypse in Riverdale. He pointed out that there are deliberate Easter eggs in the series teasing the genre change, which includes Jason being found in Sweetwater River, which lies between Riverdale and supernatural town, Greendale.

Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that he pitched “Afterlife With Archie” before the series started but they decided to go with a non-supernatural story. However, he explained that they had decided on future options to add a supernatural element in “Riverdale” so they can also put in Sabrina Spellman, the beloved teenage witch who resides in Greendale. Aguirre-Sacasa explained that if they did add a zombie element, they'd lean on the Lovecraft versions. He also said that he can’t confirm anything else right now but fans should expect the best version of murder mystery for Jason.
