Samsung Galaxy Folder 2: High-end Clamshell Phone To Launch In Korea Soon
A new Samsung Galaxy Folder 2 will be released soon in South Korea. The second generation Folder 2 with model number SM-W2017 will be a high-end folder phone. Basically, it will be a clamshell phone with impressive features commonly found on flagship devices.
The South Korean news site, ETNews, reported on the possibility of the Samsung Galaxy Folder 2 coming to the Asian nation soon. Reports said that the news comes straight from a certain telecom carrier official. The folder phone is different from the Samsung Galaxy X which will utilize a foldable display.
According to Android Headlines, the new Galaxy Folder phone will come with a 4.2-inch dual OLED display, a fingerprint sensor, and will be powered by the Snapdragon 430 CPU. It will also come with 64GB of internal storage, a 12-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front camera, and a 2,300mAh battery. The Galaxy Folder 2 will also have Samsung Pay and wireless charging and will probably have IP67 certification. The said device has reportedly already received certification from the Wireless Power Consortium. The source also mentioned the possibility of a "special edition" of the Folder 2 coming out soon.
Flip phones or clamshells had its heyday in the early 2000s. Perhaps the most popular of the bunch was the Motorola Razr. Samsung also made some clamshells including the Gusto 3, Convoy 3, and t159. The main reason why Samsung and other tech companies are still making flip phones is because there's still a market for such devices. In fact, in South Korea, the cheaper foldable phone is popular among the older demographic particularly the elderly. According to a study done by T world Direct of SK Telecoms, the Samsung Galaxy Folder LTE, along with the LG Wine Smart Jazz, is the smartphone of choice of around 75 percent of people aged 60 to 70 years old. The high-end Samsung Galaxy Folder 2 will be more expensive than the Folder LTE and other folder phones. Samsung has not indicated yet if the Galaxy Folder 2 will be made available outside Korea.
