DC's Aqualad Live Action Series in the Works for HBO Max

Another live-action DC series has been added to HBO Max's future lineup.

"You Brought Me the Ocean," the YA graphic novel chronicling the origins of DC's Aqualad, is being developed for a series adaptation by HBO Max.

Charlize Theron is one of the executive producers of the said series.

Aqualad Live-Action Series

Sources revealed that HBO Max is creating a series based on the YA graphic novel "You Brought Me the Ocean," which follows DC's Aqualad's origin story, Variety reported.

The one-hour live-action dramedy is based on DC characters and the Alex Sanchez and Jul Maroh graphic novel. Jackson "Jake" Hyde, a gay youngster residing in New Mexico, will be the focus of the series.

In this story, Jake is unaware of his true ancestry. While the character is afraid of water, he has had an odd fascination with water his entire life and longs to escape his desert surroundings and see the ocean. As he applies to the University of Miami, he falls in love with his classmate Kenny Liu while discovering superhuman powers like breathing underwater and controlling water.

The character, as reported by GameSpot, was revealed to be the son of Aquaman's nemesis Black Manta when it was initially introduced to both DC animation and comics in 2010.

In 2010, the Jackson Hyde Aqualad made his comic book and animated debuts. Brandon Vietti, Greg Weisman, and Phil Bourassa created him for the animated series Young Justice (where he goes by the Atlantean name Kaldur'ahm). DC Comics introduced its version of the new Aqualad a few months ahead of the show's premiere, with Jackson making his initial appearance in Brightest Day #4.

It was mentioned that Jackson Hyde will make his first appearance in a live-action DC project in this series.

According to Variety, this is the latest in a long line of DC shows that are either in development or currently showing on HBO Max.

HBO Max is presently working on many projects, including a spinoff of "The Batman" starring Colin Farrell as The Penguin and a Green Lantern series from Greg Berlanti. Furthermore, in addition to "Titans," HBO Max now features the live-action series "Doom Patrol" and the animated series "Harley Quinn," both of which migrated over from DC Universe after the latter's closure.

Charlize Theron as the Executive Producer of Aqualad

IGN mentioned that the series' writers and cast have yet to be disclosed. It is also unclear if the show is linked to the DCEU or James Wan's Aquaman films. However, Variety noted that Charlize Theron, A.J. Dix, Beth Kono, and Andrew Haas of Denver & Delilah Films will executive produce the series while Warner Bros. Television will produce the series.

Some may be surprised by Charlize Theron's involvement, but a previous interview may offer some insight on the subject, said The Direct.

When asked why she has yet to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the renowned actress said she is "paving [her] own way" and "creating her own opportunities," which appears to have led to this DC series. The Direct noted that this is her first venture into the world of superheroes.
