Smartphone models usually last a long time without upgrading to the newest releases. However, people are now compelled to buy the latest model because of all the features they might miss out on. You don't actually need to upgrade as soon as a better version comes out.

Many are easily enticed by the prospect of having a phone with new features, but if you really think about it, the price is often not worth the minor improvements. If you can, you should skip at least one release before getting a newer model to experience a huge difference in both hardware and software.
2. Years of Compatible Software Updates
Most Android or iOS devices usually get a few good years before the latest OS update is no longer compatible. That's usually the sign that you need to get a newer model so your apps will function properly and you won't have trouble with your system. While it can still get the latest OS, it's best to hold on to it for a while more.
3. A New Battery Might Be All You Need
One of the reasons why people buy new phones is because the current device's battery life is no longer as it was. But, as mentioned in XDA Developers, the best course here might just be a battery replacement. Compared to buying a new phone, a battery replacement is significantly cheaper.
4. You Won't Need a Better Camera
When a new smartphone model is released, one of the selling points is usually the new device having better camera quality. Upon realizing that, buyers jump to the conclusion that they must have it. Unless you use your phone for professional photography or other important camera uses, you don't need the extra megapixels.
5. Try Upgrading Your Operating System
New smartphones come with new features, sure, but a lot of those also come from the new operating system that the phone runs upon purchase. You can get those upgrades easily enough by updating your OS. You might find that those upgrades are all you need and not the features that the new model has.

6. People Don't Care If You Have Last Year's Release
Let's be honest, many consumers only want to get the latest model just to be able to say that they have it. You might think that people care whether you have the release from last year or the year before that, but they don't. You're better off spending the money on something you would actually enjoy. Save your money for a model where you can actually see a difference.
7. Necessity Over Luxury
A few minor inconveniences are not reason enough to get yourself a new device. If you're able to perform necessary tasks that you require from your current smartphone, then it's not worth spending hundreds of dollars for. Don't be fooled by the advertisements.
