Ex- Battlefield Devs Creating A Monster Game With Heart

Former Battlefield designers have established their own studio and are now developing a game that has to do with underdog monsters. They have released a video sneak peek for the upcoming game.

Ben Cousins and David Goldfarb formerly worked for several Battlefield titles including the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 title. However, they left the studio to form their own company called The Outsiders and created Project Wight, a game where the protagonist is an intelligent monster whose kind was almost driven to extinction by humans.

The duo said that the game was a deviation from the usual theme where instead of humans as the protagonists, the tables are turned making them the bad guys and the monster as the good guy. They said that it has always been their desire to make gamers have a different perspective about games.

"I always side with the monster and the underdog. This is a way to invert the traditional idea of being a hero," Goldfarb said.

He added that their inspiration for the non-human perspective of the game was John Gardner's Grendel. He said that there are a lot of angles to explore using this perspective, especially what a monster can do which humans cannot.

Cousins added that they are creating a brand new species of creature with new abilities and characteristics. He said that they put variety in each level of the gameplay to make it more interesting. That variety includes the power level of the monster at different stages of the game.

Aside from the unique storyline, the duo also said that it is some sort of a passion project for them where they want to show that a game created using Unity can be at the same quality level with AAA productions. It might still have a long way to go, the duo added, but they are optimistic that they can achieve their goal.
