Nokia Lumia 928 vs. Lumia 920: Key Differences Explained

Nokia just announced the hotly anticipated Verizon-bound variant of its successful WP8 smartphone Lumia 920. The Verizon variant is the Lumia 928 and has several differences in features when compared to AT&T's Lumia 920.

Verizon's Lumia 928 is slated to become available May 16 for $99 (on a two-year contract), after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Here we take a look at how the two smartphones, the Lumia 928 and Lumia 920, differ:

Design

Design-wise, the Lumia 928 is a lot more blocky and rectangular when compared to the Lumia 920. Even though the Verizon-bound Lumia 928 does not have the sharp edges of the Lumia 920, its rear retains the typical Nokia convex shape.

Display

Both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 928 sport a 4.5-inch screen with 1280 x 768 pixels resolution.  However, the Lumia 920 has an IPS LCD screen vis-a-vis Lumia 928's OLED one. The OLED screen will make a big difference in direct sunlight and battery power as it will be more vivid and supposedly delivers a better battery life.

What's more, The Lumia 920 has a pixel density of 332 pixels per inch (ppi), which is bettered by the Lumia 928, which has a slightly higher density of 334 ppi.

Dimensions

The Lumia 920 measures 5.13 x 2.79 x 0.42 inches, whereas the Lumia 928 has 5.24 x 2.71 x 0.44 inches dimensions, making the latter taller, narrower and thicker.

Weight

At 162gms, the Lumia 928 is much lighter than the Lumia 920 which weighs 185gms.

Camera

The Lumia 920 and Lumia 928 both feature an 8.7-megapixel primary camera with Carl Zeiss optics; however there is a key difference. The Lumia 928 features Xenon flash, which is more powerful and a better balanced solution than the LED flash on the Lumia 920. But the Lumia 920 has a BSI sensor, unlike the Lumia 928.

Moreover, the Lumia 920 has a better 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera when compared to the 1.2-megapixel one of the Lumia 928.

Battery 

Both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 928 pack in a 2000mAh battery. However, the Lumia 920's battery is a Li-Ion one versus the Lumia 928's Li-Polymer.

Nokia also promises improved battery life for the Lumia 928 versus the Lumia 920. The Lumia 928 has a maximum talk time of 16.2 hours compared to 10.8 hours of the Lumia 920. The Lumia 928 touts a maximum standby time of 541 hours compared to 460 hours of the Lumia 920, and playback time of 80 hours compared to 74 hours.

Speaker and Microphones

The Lumia 928 comes with a new and improved speaker, which goes up to 140 decibels. Users also get three high audio amplitude capture (HAAC) microphones for better audio recording. This enables users to record sound with better results.

Colors

The Lumia 920 is available in yellow, white, red, black, and gray colors, whereas the Lumia 928 will be available in black and white.
