Makoto Shinkai Anime Movie ‘Your Name’ Hits $148 Million; Novel Sells 1 Million Copies

Makoto Shinkai's Japanese animated movie, "Your Name" has earned 148 million dollars in the Japanese box office while its novel of the same title has sold more than one million copies in just 8 weeks.

Japanese animated film, "Your Name", also known as "Kimi No Na Wa" has just grossed 15.4 billion yen or 148 million dollars in the Japanese box office after only 52 days since it was released. "Your Name" anime film is the first Japanese animated movie that is neither created by Studio Ghibli nor Hayao Miyazaki to gain this much success. Trailing behind the Japanese animated movie "Ponyo," the Makoto Shinkai movie is the fifth highest grossing animated film in Japan to date. It is also reported that "Your Name" is the 11th highest grossing Japanese or overseas film.

With that, the inspirational novel, "Your Name", written by Makoto Shinkai as well has just sold over one million copies worldwide, making it the 34th in the history of the bunko book chart for a book having sold more than one million copies. Released and published on June 18, Oricon bunko (trade paperback) has announced that the "Your Name" novel is currently ranked 18th on its overall chart. A spin-off book of "Your Name" was released and it was titled, "Kimi No Na Wa. Anotherside: Earthbound" which revolves around the stories of supporting characters from the animated film. The said book was authored by Arata Kano and it has sold a total of 207,000 copies.

"Your Name" is an original Japanese animated movie created by Makoto Shinkai which was released and distributed by Toho. The movie is about two teenagers who live far away from each other but have been transported into each other's body, making them see what's on the other side of the world. The two go on a journey finding themselves as they learn to deal with their feelings. The movie "Your Name" was released on June 18, 2016.
