It appears as if August 1 will be the rebirth of Motorola and possibly herald the launch of the highly anticipated Moto X smartphone, if a newly leaked ad campaign is to be believed. The company, now owned by Google, is looking to step up its game in the smartphone world and the device that will begin that transition will be the Moto X phone.
Motorola has done a great job of keeping the Moto X under wraps, unlike some smartphones makers that saw an entire smartphone lineup leak in full before a planned announcement. While there were countless rumors of what the device would feature, Motorola was able to keep images and important information regarding the handset under strict lock and key.
The first real acknowledgement of the smartphone was revealed by Motorola CEO, Dennis Woodside, when speaking at the AllThings D conference, where he confirmed the smartphone's official name and some of its features. He was careful to not reveal too many features of what he called Motorola's "hero phone" of 2013. He did reveal the device would be contextually aware of its surroundings and would adapt accordingly. Woodside also revealed that the Moto X would be released later this summer, which is a smart move on Motorola's part, since Apple's iPhone 5S is expected to be released in September.
A newly leaked ad campaign now appears to show that Motorola plans on saying goodbye to the smartphone market, but don't get too worried. That goodbye signals a rebirth of the company and the date listed is August 1. One of the images from the campaign is a goodbye letter that reads:
"We're not good at goodbyes. No one is. They're hard. And sad. But the time has come. After nearly a century of innovation, we must say farewell. Farewell to the first handheld cell phone. To the Razr. To the game snake. Farewell to the Motorola that has shaped today.
It's time to start building tomorrow. Change is afoot. New faces. New ideas. New technologies. The Motorola that returns will not be the company you once knew. But we have some work to do. So until we're ready, we're going away. No new ads or tweets. No site updates. Just silence until we begin the next chapter.
Until we meet again, goodbye Moto."
Other images show what appears to be a countdown to when we'll hear from Motorola again. The images were published on June 23 and the timer reads 37 days and 13 hours, which would line up with an August 1 date. There are also images that say, "Hello Again," another reads "What Could Change? How About Everything." It is believed that these ads could be the second phase of Motorola's new marketing campaign that will be used after August 1.
The images were published on Behance.net by designer B.A. Bakken. It's not clear if these images are really part of a new campaign or the designer's rebranding concept. The ads appear to be very detailed and with the Moto X expected in August, these could be the first images of Motorola's rebirth.
The ads might be concept images created by a designer and not something Motorola is taking part in, so we'll have to wait a few more weeks to see if these ads confirm the information, but with Apple's iPhone 5S approaching, and Dennis Woodside's announcement that the Moto X would be available later this summer certainly adds some credibility to these new rebranding images.
