Android 5.0 to launch as ‘Lollipop’ at Google I/O 2014

With the Google I/O 2014 conference ready to kick off, attention is turning to Android 5.0, which will reportedly launch as with the "Lollipop" moniker.

Android 4.4 KitKat is still rolling out to devices and many have yet to receive it, but the next version is nonetheless in tow and is widely expected to debut at the Google I/O 2014 developer conference that starts today, June 25.

The name "Lollipop" has been mentioned before for the next version of Google's popular mobile operating system, and a new report now bolsters claims that Android 5.0 will indeed be called Lollipop.

The news comes from Bulgarian tech insider Nixanbal, who has proved to be accurate before when leaking yet-to-be-announced news in the tech world. The tipster cites "reliable sources" and claims that Android 5.0 Lollipop is the next major release.

While the name "Lollipop" remains unconfirmed for now, it would make sense as it would follow Google's traditional pattern for naming each Android version after sweets, in alphabetical order.

As a reminder, Android 1.5 Cupcake and 1.6 Doughnut were the first named versions of the OS. Google then launched Android 2.0-2.1 Éclair, Android 2.2 Froyo, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Android 3.0 Honeycomb, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean. For the last version, Google teamed up with Nestle and launched Android 4.4 KitKat.

The next version of Android should have a name starting with "L" to keep up the tradition, and "Lollipop" would fit the bill perfectly. It remains to be seen, however, if this information turns out to be accurate.

Nothing is confirmed at this point, but with the Google I/O 2014 developer conference set to start today we'll know all there is to know straight from the source soon enough. Google also traditionally releases each new Android version with a new launch vehicle in the form of a Nexus device. This year the rumors hinted at an HTC Nexus tablet, but a new Nexus 6 smartphone is not out of the question either.

We'll keep an eye on Google's big event to bring you the latest news as soon as they become available, so stay tuned.
