Platinum Games Teases New IP In Development

The developer of Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, Platinum Games, has just teased that they are working on a new title. The new IP is being described as "formless, shapeless" by the studio. The announcement was reportedly made during the BitSummit 2017 event in Kyoto, Japan. The only detail that was given about the new game is that it will be handled by a new game director assigned by the company.

Platinum Games revealed the news through their producer Atsushi Inaba. To date, the developer has a pool of great talent to work on the new IP like Kenji Saito who directed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Hideki Kamiya who worked on Devil May Cry and Bayonetta and the recently cancelled Scalebound for Microsoft, Nier: Automata's Yoko Taro, and Yusuke Hashimoto who helmed Bayonetta 2. Game Rant speculates that the new game director might be Inaba himself.

Reports can confirm that Platinum Games' decision to assign a new director for their new IP is nothing new. The studio reportedly welcomes the chance to allow talented individuals to direct their new titles. Others also suspect that the company is willing to risk a new director on a brand new IP since it might be entirely their own game. Case in point, the usual practice for developers who collaborate with other studios is to reveal their partners during game announcements.

Some of the current projects under Platinum Games are Lost Order and Granblue Fantasy Project Re: Link, both are scheduled to launch sometime in 2018. The two games are being developed together with Cygames and currently have no hint of a future Western release. It is suspected that the new IP might be a game that is geared for a global release. Industry analysts are confident that the studio will have another hit on its hands based on its past software releases. IGN also adds that Vanquish is getting a PC release next week.

Fans of Platinum Games were recently surprised that Microsoft has renewed the trademark for Scalebound, which is an action-adventure IP directed by Hideki Kamiya. The game was officially canceled a few months ago but the latest developments spawned rumors of its revival.
