Niantic Says Global Release Of 'Pokemon Go' Caused The Closure Of Tracking Apps

Niantic has announced that the reason for the tracking apps ban has been the global launch of the "Pokemon Go" game.

According to Niantic CEO John Hanke, the game's global release has put the company in a situation in which it has not been able to cope with the increasing demand that is being put on its servers. In an update on maintaining and running the service, Niantic's "Pokemon Go" website explains that running the game at such a scale is challenging. Third parties attempting to access Niantic's servers outside the game itself have greatly amplified those challenges.

According to The Independent, the game developer of "Pokemon Go" had claimed that it had no other alternative than to make modifications to the game so that more players could have access to it. The update rolled out by Niantic last week killed the Pokemon tracker app inside the game and banned access to third-party tracking tools.

These changes together provoked chaos in the popular game, leading to many complaints from angry players. Many people asked for refunds for the money they spent in the "Pokemon Go" game, and some even threatened to quit altogether.

As a result of the public outcry, Niantic had to start a public relation campaign in order to contain the damage from its update. The reason invoked by Niantic for the shutting off third-party tracking apps makes sense. It seems that the company could not continue the international release of the game without taking this measure.

The "Pokemon Go" rollout is being staggered by Niantic in order to make sure that its servers can take the load, but this strategy makes that players from many countries are still unable to legitimately download the game. According to Niantic, sites like Pokevision, which use the company's servers in order to scrape the game and find out where Pokemon are located, are actually hurting its "ability to deliver the game to new and existing players."
