Sex Addiction: Intense Sexual Desire No Longer A Mental Disorder

Recent reports claim that sex addiction is no longer considered a mental disorder. In the past years, various therapies have been made available for those who cannot stop their sexual urges, but even the psychologists who conduct the treatment claim that sex addiction is not real.

From aged to young adults to teens, there is no shortage of the so-called sex addicts in this present generation. As the heightened sexual urge has long been considered as addiction and categorized as a mental disorder, sex therapists have recently come up with a conclusion that the so-called sex addiction may not have existed after all.

In the past years, from aged to young adults to teens, there has been no shortage of the so-called sex addicts. From the Science perspective, experts claim that there are actually no concrete proofs that sex addiction is real. The same is deemed by a professional organization of sex therapists and educators in the United States.

Claiming a sex addiction may be a go-to for misbehaving celebrities and politicians, but from a science perspective, there isn't enough study to prove sex addiction is real, according to a professional organization of sex educators and therapists.

Earlier this month, the The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) claimed that there are no empirical proofs that will classify sex and porn addiction as a mental disorder. As noted by USA Today, the AASECT believes that therapies and counseling sessions to treat the supposed sex addiction is undefined by human sexuality hence the methods are unsupported by the organization.

Despite this claim, AASECT does eliminate the consequences to the psychological and physical aspects as well as the health of people brought about by intense sexual urges. However, they still point out that sex addiction is merely a misrepresentation of the human sexual behavior being out of control which is naturally experienced by everyone over puberty.

The fear of suffering the consequences to the social relationships of people and their careers is said by Braun-Harvey (one of the authors of the said AASECT claim) is what is causing people to label such instances as sex addiction. According to CNN, sex addiction being a mental disorder started only when the book "Out of the Shadows" in the 1980s, which likened the compulsive sexual behavior of people to some sort of an addiction. This has then started psychological treatments as people started to believe that sex addiction is real.
